Avoiding Job Search Burnout

Not only can interviewing for potential jobs be a lengthy process, but it is a tiring one, too. Even though we have come out of the recession and there are increasingly more jobs available, particularly in the IT field, any job hunt has its share of ups and downs and is an emotional rollercoaster. Between being out of work for an extended amount of time and the reality of rejection, it is no wonder people get easily discouraged as the process continues along. The problem is, is that when you get bogged down, your sadness and down spirit can and will have a negative affect on how both recruiters and potential employers perceive you.

In order to keep yourself motivated and positive as the search wears on, there are many tactics to keep in mind that will help you get that dream job. To start, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. Whether it is from old bosses, recruiters or even from interviews that didn’t work out, take constructive feedback and turn it into a positive experience. Being able to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses will help you to round out your interview and job skills.

Another tactic to keep in mind is to gather insider information – don’t just prepare for interviews and job discussions by researching the positions. Keep yourself busy and look into industry trends, get market advice from colleagues and talk to people who are working the positions you are interested in. Finding out this information will give you new angles with which to approach your search and interviews. Doing so (and improving your skills) will help you narrow down what positions are the ideal fit for you. Individuals often get discouraged by rejection when going on too many interviews and researching jobs that are long-shots. Instead, become familiar with your skills, interests and the market/industry you are interested in and be realistic about potential positions. Looking into a couple reaches is totally fine but by combining your background, experience and interests, you will find more opportunities.

Finally, don’t be afraid to step away from the screen and get some retail therapy. No, we are not kidding! Investing in something new like a gadget, or suit, or nice pair of shoes will rejuvenate you and gives people that extra confidence boost. If you go into interview feeling prepared and confident in yourself, it rubs off on the recruiter or potential employer and your job search will hopefully be cut short when you land that dream job.
