Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 12:00pm-8:00pm (40 hours per week) + potential for occasional Overtime + On-Call coverage (every other weekend)

Compensation: $40 to $45 per hour

Position Overview: A leading energy efficiency and renewable energy company is seeking a Power Plant Operator to support the operation and maintenance of the Tufts University Central Energy Plant (CEP) in Medford, MA. This role will report directly to the Regional Manager and be responsible for ensuring plant safety, environmental compliance, equipment maintenance, and operational reliability. The Power Plant Operator will work collaboratively within a small team, contributing to the facility’s daily operational and maintenance activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote and adhere to company’s safety-first culture; champion continuous safety improvement across operations.

  • Support safety investigations, report incidents, and implement corrective actions as needed.

  • Ensure compliance with all plant permits and environmental regulations.

  • Maintain a proactive and efficient maintenance program to ensure system reliability and performance.

  • Supervise and coordinate contractors for routine and emergency maintenance work.

  • Plan and oversee scheduled maintenance outages and maintain related documentation.

  • Identify and propose upgrades to improve safety and plant reliability.

  • Provide off-hour support and emergency response as required.

  • Assist the Regional Manager with operational budgeting and cost optimization strategies.

  • Maintain training programs and operator qualifications to ensure workforce readiness.

  • Review and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) as necessary.

  • Manage material orders, track deliveries, and review/approve related invoices.

  • Foster strong relationships with Tufts University representatives and stakeholders.

  • Support reporting and special project initiatives as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • A (current) Massachusetts Second Class Fireman License.

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in an industrial operations or maintenance setting.

  • Background in power generation, boiler operations, district steam heating, and chilled water systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret system schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.

  • Valid U.S. driver's license.

  • Strong organizational and leadership capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal technical training through military service, vocational school, or industrial experience.

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a technical discipline is a plus.

  • Experience with military or merchant marine power plant systems highly valued.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Familiarity with Maximo or similar Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
