Role: Accounting Specialist

Location: Long Island City, NY

Reports to: Director of Finance 

 

Overview of the role:  

Provides financial support services within the Financial Services area of LiveOnNY.  Diverse and varied accounting and financial responsibilities include the calculation, posting, and verification of financial data for use in maintaining accounting and financial records. Supports and fosters the mission of the organization and its commitment to organ and tissue donation.  

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for reviewing and processing all donor-related invoices.    
  • Perform billing and collection functions.  
  • On a timely basis, compile, prepare and send all invoices.  
  • Post payments and credits and maintain the accounts receivable system including generation of various accounts receivable schedules for monthly closing.  
  • Follow up on all outstanding unpaid bills until collection occurs.  
  • Provide regular A/R status reports to the Vice President/CFO and Director of Finance.  
  • Complete monthly reconciliation of bank statements.    
  • Provide weekly cash balance report to Vice President/CFO and Director of Finance.  
  • Assist in monthly closing for accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll as well as monthly and quarterly related journal entries.    
  • Assist in the preparation of accruals, prepaid, and fixed asset/depreciation schedules needed for proper accounting of expenses.  
  • Participate in the preparation of quarterly financial statements and supporting schedules. 
  • Assist with various organizational audits and informational requests including independent outside year-end audits, annual Form 990 tax return information requests, Riverbend cost report audits, workers compensation insurance payroll audits, and other financial audits that may occur.  
  • Prepare quarterly departmental budget vs. actual variance reports.  
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Education 

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) or equivalent plus one to three years experience; or an associate's degree in Accounting with two to four years experience.  Some understanding of medical terminology and procedures is helpful.  

 

Language Skills: 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common journals and documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write simple communications and documents. Ability to effectively present information to co-workers, the general public, and management. 

 

Mathematical Skills: 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.  

 

Other: 

Ability to use a computer and financial software applications including financial spreadsheets and other relevant software products such as PowerPoint and Word.
